Jeannie and Phil Diamantis are an entrepreneurial couple, to say the least. They’ve previously owned the supermarket, newsagency and post office in Orford. Looking to start a new business that was family-friendly, they settled on the ambitious plan to open a play centre on Hobart’s eastern shore. After a lengthy initial stage of research and fine-tuning, Far Out was launched eighteen months ago and has gone from strength to strength ever since.

Far Out Play Centre

We went to investigate Far Out Play Centre, located on the South Arm Highway in Mornington, and met with Jeannie for a tour. The enterprise was recently named the Employer of Choice at the 2013 Business East – City of Clarence Awards for Excellence, which prompted our visit. There’s little wonder the business is winning awards; they have attracted a great staff team and the level of service is second to none.

With an active Facebook page, Far Out Play Centre is already well-known in Hobart and the wider Tasmanian community. Parents are loving the facilities, which are clean and well-planned. The food and drink is carefully selected and caters to a variety of tastes and dietary requirements.

Lunch in the bright and attractive cafe when visiting Far Out Play Centre

We’re sharing this information for the benefit of our interstate readers. If you find yourself in Tassie with a couple of kids and the weather turns ugly… this place is the bomb! Your sanity will be restored and your holiday will be saved.

Don’t wait for a rainy day to visit though; the play centre is open seven days from 9:00 to 5:00, and a sunny day might just mean there’s a car-park free right at the front door! A top-notch barista will prepare coffee for the adults, and there’s magazines and daily newspapers to browse as the kids burn off all their excess energy.

Far Out Play Centre loyalty and frequent-sipper cards reward repeat customers, and you can even buy gift cards. That’s a handy idea for the Christmas stocking. The vouchers can be used for admission fees and/or purchases from the cafe.

Heaven for Kids in Tasmania

We’ve been sharing the benefits for adults, but we mustn’t forget about the kids! The juniors will LOVE an expedition like this one. Stay for an hour or stay all day, it’s your choice. Jeannie and Phil’s youngest son (of three) was on hand to demonstrate just how much fun Far Out Play Centre can offer. Finn is a gorgeous model and not surprisingly, quite happy to go to work with his mum and dad.

We’ll let our photos showcase the equipment, which was all sparkling clean and extremely colourful. Ball pits, trampolines, ladders, slides, a jumping castle… it’s all there! Every conceivable obstacle and jungle-gym essential has been included in the biggest of big sheds, which was built on the former quarry site specifically for Far Out Play Centre. The shed has been modified to optimise customer comfort and ambience.

A fenced section allows the younger tots some freedom, with parents a mere moment away, seated in comfort. The division allows some protection for the toddlers from the more boisterous schoolies.
