Whenever I visit Tasmania, I have to make sure that I accumulate the right goodies for the return trip and for her indoors back home.

After my last visit in October I decided to take photos of my purchases so that I could write this article today. My main reason for buying all the goodies is because of the lack of availability or the difficulty of procuring in the area that I live.
We grow our own potatoes and find that the kipflers perform the best. I love Tasmanian spuds and can’t resist putting a couple of bags of Bismarks in the back when they’re in season. I only buy them with a bit of soil around them.
Tasmanian cheeses are up there with the best. I particularly like the Pyengana cloth rind cheddar but chose smaller pieces this time. The Pyengana Dairy, café and shop is an experience not to be missed. Go and get yourself a platter with condiments and a pickled onion. You won’t be disappointed.
If you like baking bread, call in at the bakery in Oatlands and grab a bag of stone-ground flour from the Callington Mill across the road. Even better do a tour of the windmill and then have a cream bun in the bakery while you’re contemplating what flour to buy.
I love good quality steak and we are fortunate where we live in having so much local beef. However I can’t resist Cape Grim steaks from Leven Gourmet Meats in Ulverstone or from the Wursthaus in Hobart. This steak is so tender you can eat it raw and we cook it for less than a minute a side.
Tasmanian butter for everyday use is absent on the shelves of our major three and I find it necessary to purchase a few packets of Duck River. Why can’t we get it here? Nothing better than buttered toast with sardines on top!
State Wide, Tasmania Has The Goodies
As you drive down into Gunns Plains you will notice some smiling milking goats on the left. If you go too far, you will see the Think Tasmania banner and you’ve missed the gate to Mathom Farm. On the day that I visited the milking had ended but the friendly dairyman was only too pleased to display his wares. For very little money, I came away with jars of fetta and yoghurt plus a roll of chevre.
Over the road I noticed a lady in gum boots tending piglets and geese. An unforgettable smile beamed off her mucky cheeks and I knew she was contented.
My continual search for a supreme pork pie hasn’t ended. Staying close to a good butcher is something I consider when visiting the Apple Isle. Sharman’s in Wivenhoe fits the bill. Not only do they sell good meat, they also make a decent pork pie. I like to eat them cold with hot English mustard and Blue Banner pickled onions that are readily available in our shops.
The reason I’ve been married for thirty two years is because we both like good food and crave goodies from Tasmania. Our last port of call before boarding the Spirit of Tasmania is Petuna Seafoods on Tarleton Street, East Devonport. Smoked ocean trout and salmon pieces fit the bill for use in pasta dishes. They travel well and can be frozen prior to use. For those flying out of Hobart, I would recommend a visit to Tassal in Salamanca for similar products.
Without a doubt, wallaby mince is much better for pasta dishes and meat balls than its taller cousin. I can’t understand why Lenah Game Meats don’t market their product outside of Tasmania.
I can’t leave Tasmania without buying a few tubs of Leatherwood Honey. I like all types of honey and I know where I can get some exceptional honey on my next visit but there’s something about the Leatherwood variety and its unique taste. Lemon and honey is the best cure for a sore throat and I often whack a kilo into my home brewed beer for when I need a bender!
Watered down milk is all the modern generation is used to but if ever you’ve tasted the real thing, it’s a totally different product. Ashgrove Cheese and Red Cow Dairies are both committed to marketing something that comes close to the real thing. On the shelves of Coles in Devonport, I have a choice of three different Ashgrove milks and I prefer the non-homogenised green milk. It’s really dark in colour and dense with a bit of cream on top. (Almost as good as Guinness)!
Amazing how I’m looking for Tasmanian goodies while a friend in Tasmania is seeking the UK produced Birds custard powder! I would be interested to hear what goodies Tasmanians buy when they visit the mainland. Let me know.
