Recommend a Hobart restaurant? We often get asked by visiting friends, family and readers of Think Tasmania to help them make a choice. This can be fraught with disaster as dining is such a personal experience. With that qualification in mind, here’s one suggestion for anyone interested…

Hobart Restaurant? Try Mezethes Greek Taverna

On a cool Monday night, we ventured into Salamanca on Hobart’s waterfront for dinner. The trees were sparkling with fairy lights and there was parking available at the front door – the Greek Gods must have been smiling on us!!

Salamanca Place, hub for Hobart Restuarants

It was a little after 7:30pm and the room was almost filled with weekday diners. This was a relief, because we had originally tried Eating On The Edge at Lauderdale via South Arm Peninsula but our telephone booking had been declined as being too late for a quiet night. Anyway…

Hobart Restaurant: Thumbs Up!

The staff at this Hobart restaurant were very pleasant and knowledgeable and between the two of us we ordered…

  • an appetizer of char-grilled octopus*
  • honey-glazed lamb and almond meatballs, with rice and salad
  • goat ragu, with bread and roast potatoes
  • a beer, a glass of Greek wine and coffee

Our dinner was worth $85.00 which was inflated a little due to the goat special ($35.00). Most of the mains were priced at about $25.00.

The choice was made difficult due to the number of tempting options, but what we did choose turned out to be perfect. For my next visit, I would like to try the dips and definitely a dessert (lots of creations with filo pastry, nuts and honey on offer).

Great Greek Food, Great Hobart Ambiance

Decorated in the traditional Greek blue and white, the dining room had small lights strung overhead from silver wires and a cheerful atmosphere. And as part of the Salamanca Arts precinct, there was additional seating outside the charming building for anyone mad enough to brave the elements.

Hobart restaurant dining on the edge of Salamanca Place

Several diners entered after us (which didn’t pose a problem to anyone) but I would recommend a booking if possible. This Hobart restaurant is obviously a popular one. With delicious food, great location and equally impressive service, it seems a safe option.  Let’s hope you agree!!

Mezethes Greek Taverna is accessed from Salamanca Place via Woobys Lane in Hobart.
