I’m running a weekend Sing For Your Life workshop at the amazing Freycinet Eco Retreat in early November. It’s basically two days of singing in a beautiful location, and there’s a Saturday pizza and campfire night as part of the weekend. We ran our first workshop there last year and it was fantastic, so we’re going back for another weekend this year! I’ve attached some photos of last year’s Sing For Your Life workshop.
I want to offer your readers a discount. I’ve set up a discount code function in our ticketing site. To access a 10% discount (applicable to all tickets, even the group of four which is already discounted), type in the codeword THINK at the payment page and the discount will be applied.
It’s a pretty great experience for anyone who loves to sing – or even just wants to sing but hasn’t found the right time or place yet. It’s a pretty unique Tasmanian experience all round.
Sing For Your Life at Freycinet Eco Retreat

- Saturday workshop: $40 (incl. lunch)
- Sunday workshop: $30 (incl. lunch)

- Group of four full weekend tickets $340 ($85 each)
About the Workshop:
The Big Spring Sing is a celebration of singing and is suitable for people of all ages and levels of ability. If you just love to sing, or you’ve always wanted to give it a go, this is your chance!
The singing sessions are relaxed, supportive and friendly, and you’ll be looking out to the Hazards as you create beautiful harmonies, learning a range of songs as part of a four-part a cappella choir for the weekend.
We’ll sing a mix of great songs, most of them gospel – big sounds, great chords, and fantastic energy! You don’t need any music-reading skills – everything is taught by ear.
Day rates are available if you can’t make it for the whole weekend – but we highly recommend the full weekend experience as you’ll feel more comfortable in the workshops, you’ll get to sing more songs, and you’ll have more chances to enjoy the company of your fellow singers. Save $10 on a full weekend ticket by getting together with some friends and booking a group of four!
The workshop leader is Jane Christie-Johnston – Director of the Sing For Your Life! Choir in Hobart, member of a cappella groups About Time and Heart & Soul, and singer with guitar/vocals duo Silk. Jane has run workshops around Tasmania in locations including Bruny Island, St Helens, Triabunna, Devonport, Burnie, Kingston, Woodbridge, Hobart and more!
Although gospel songs feature in these workshops, there is no religious element to the weekend.
About the Venue:
‘The Arc’ at Freycinet Eco Retreat is a beautiful workshop venue where you can escape from it all for a great weekend of singing. The Arc has previously hosted wedding receptions, dinners, and more – including the wonderful Big Gospel Sing workshop in October 2012.
Basic directions (arriving by car): Turn off the Tasman Highway onto the C302 Coles Bay Road, approximately 25 minutes north of Swansea. Continue for 18km and turn left (‘Freycinet Eco Retreat’ sign). Follow the gravel road for 2km and follow the signs to the Arc.
About the Catering:
Due to the logistical challenges of running this weekend at a relatively remote location, and so that there are no surprises for our caterers, registration fees include lunch each day, plus tea/coffee during set breaks. This year there is NOT a ‘workshop only’ rate available.
The lunch menu is likely to be a hearty vegetable stew with bread on Saturday, and quiche and salad on Sunday. Gluten-free options are available – please email us at least a week before the workshop if you require a gluten-free lunch.
Saturday night’s pizza and drinks event is part of this event, but isn’t a structured singing session. Come along, relax, enjoy two hours of pizza and drinks, get to know your fellow workshoppers, and stay on after the dinner service if you want. Feel free to bring a guitar or a song to share around the campfire! Note: gluten-free pizzas are available – please email requests at least a week before the workshop.
About the Accommodation:
Freycinet Eco Retreat offers a variety of accommodation options, including camping, the Saltwater Shack (sleeps four – minimum 2-night booking), and an Eco-Lodge (sleeps 2 – minimum 2-night booking). Note that there is a 15-minute walk between The Arc and the camping area. To find out more about accommodation options onsite, contact Freycinet Eco Retreat by email or phone (03) 6257 0300.
There are numerous accommodation options nearby. The options closest to the Eco Retreat are Shuckers Cottages, Pelican Bay Bed & Breakfast, Beach Baby and Azure Beach House. Slightly further afield is Sheoaks Bed & Breakfast which also manages six holiday rental houses nearby. Please contact property owners directly to make your accommodation bookings.
About the Bookings:
Book with Sing For Your Life online or call Jane (see above) for other payment options. Please note that for catering purposes there will be NO DOOR SALES on the day. If you’re unable or unwilling to book online, we will need you to pay a $20 non-refundable deposit (due by 25 October – cheque or money order) to secure a place in the workshop. Online sales close at 5:00pm on Wednesday 30 October.
About the Sing For Your Life! Choir:
The Sing For Your Life! Choir is a community choir based in Hobart. Since starting up in 2005 with about a dozen members, we now have more than 100 singers regularly rehearsing and performing together.
We are an a cappella choir, which means we sing unaccompanied (no instruments; just voices), and we sing mainly gospel, African and other uplifting songs.
We are open to anyone who would like to come and sing with us – no auditions, no sheet music, and no stress! To find out more about coming to sing with us, click here to Join the Choir. You’ll be made to feel welcome – we’re a pretty relaxed and happy bunch!
About the Community:
Sing For Your Life! started as a program funded by the Multiple Sclerosis Society, for people living with MS. After six months of about a dozen people singing regularly together, the MS Society program ended but the singers wanted to continue. In March 2006 we became the ‘Sing For Your Life!’ Choir, and began welcoming new members, with the choir now open to anyone who wants to join. We currently have approximately 100 ‘active’ members who like to perform, plus about 20-30 more singers who drop in for a sing when they can, and we have two rehearsal groups which come together to perform as one big, happy choir!
An important concept which we foster in the choir is what we call ‘Choir = Community’. We work to build a sense of community within the choir, and we also look beyond our own group with the aim of ‘giving back’ to the wider community whenever we can. Most of our performances are public or community events, and more often than not audiences can come to watch us for free.
The Musical Director of the Sing For Your Life! Choir is Jane Christie-Johnston. Jane was involved in running the original MS Society program with Hazel Ryan and Lorraine Mars, and took on the role of coordinating the choir at the end of 2006.
