Looking for accommodation? Ulverstone on your travel agenda? You can stop looking. Seriously! I know I probably overuse the word “awesome” when I’m writing about Tasmania, and I will try to reign that in. But for now, the best way to describe our accommodation at Ulverstone River Retreat… awesome!
Accommodation Ulverstone
You can’t judge a book by its cover, and you can’t judge a tourist operator by their website. Of course they’re going to show you the pretty bits! That’s why we like to actually travel to a place and check, first-hand, on the accommodation. Ulverstone is no exception and we’re happy to report that our hosts Tony and Val Foster fully deserve our recommendation. Great linen, spotlessly clean, little noise, reasonably priced… all the essentials for a great holiday.
When I return from a reconnaissance mission to my desk and prepare to write a review, there’s an easy way to rate a business. How many photos have I taken to cover the full picture? In the case of accommodation at Ulverstone River Retreat, I have downloaded a mountain of photos! So many in fact, I’ve had to combine some of the images into collages to show you everything. As I said to Tony & Val, they have all bases covered.
Ulverstone River Retreat Loft Apartment
We stayed in the Loft Apartment, which is located above the main house. Much as we love to meet new people and chat about things to do in the region, not all visitors want to interact with the owners and other guests. Both apartments have separate access and are very private. They also both overlook the Leven River and have their own outdoor areas. A very pleasant place to enjoy a meal and a quiet glass of wine!
Please note: if you are travelling with small children, there is no fencing between the apartments and the Leven River.
The Loft Apartment is very spacious, with room to unpack your bags and still move around. While the modern kitchen is compact, it has all the essentials to prepare your own meals. The large bathroom has a full bath and two-way access, which is perfect when travelling with kids (we should know!). Our kids slept soundly on the sofa bed in the lounge, while the queen-size bed was the most comfortable I’ve ever experienced on the road.
Ulverstone River Retreat Mezzanine Apartment
Next door is the stand-alone Mezzanine Apartment. Val kindly gave us a tour of that unit as well, and the decor is just as gorgeous. There’s a generous kitchen, with a dining table, full fridge and an oven. The main bedroom is upstairs and the mezzanine can be closed off by sliding a wall across the opening. The upstairs bathroom has laundry facilities and there’s a shower in the downstairs bathroom.
Now here’s a really awesome feature of the accommodation at Ulverstone River Retreat. Undoubtedly, it’s a good option for couples and small families. But for two couples travelling together, an extended family or the traveller who snores loudly and keeps everyone else awake, here’s the deal. Just outside the Mezzanine Apartment is a small, powered room with a double bed. Your own private, upmarket cubby house! Share meals, play cards and watch TV together; then have your own sleeping quarters.
Things to Do Based at Accommodation in Ulverstone
I can imagine groups having lots of fun staying together at Ulverstone River Retreat. Sharing with company is always nicer when you have your own space! And you could seriously stay the whole time and not venture too far at all. With the Leven River literally at the doorstep, there’s skiing, kayaying, boating… and don’t forget your fishing rod. Apparently celebrity fisherman Rex Hunt recommends the Green Bank, which adjoins the retreat.
The Ulverstone Golf Club claims to be “Tassie’s best kept secret”. It’s just a little further along the same quiet country road leading to Ulverstone River Retreat. But being a secret treasure, we’d better keep that just between us. Okay?
What’s the perfect time of year to plan a holiday and book accommodation? Ulverstone is a very central location for all the attractions on the north west coast of Tasmania. Annual events range from the the Tulips Festival in the Wynyard and Table Cape region, to the Tasmanian Craft Fair held in Deloraine. Devonport, the home of the Spirit of Tasmania passenger ferries, is less than 20kms to the east.
We found it very convenient to visit plenty of places while we were based at our accommodation at Ulverstone River Retreat. Some of them include the following…
-
-
- Wings Wildlife Park
- Tasmazia and the Village of Lower Crackpot
- The Groovy Penguin
- Beautiful Beaches of Ulverstone
- Gunns Plains Goodies
- Lake Barrington
- Leven Canyon
- Preston Falls
- Central Highland Lakes
- The Town of Penguin
-
But guess what? There’s lots more places we missed, and we’ll just have to go back again. Isn’t that a shame? At least we know of some awesome accommodation. Ulverstone River Retreat… save an apartment for us!
Think Tasmania stayed as guests of Ulverstone River Retreat. Additional photos (as indicated) were supplied by business owners Tony and Val Foster.
This property looks magnificent and is a credit to you both.
Lobster Creek Road makes it sound very tempting. Ulverstone is one of the places where we would consider retiring. Very handily situated for Devonport & Burnie. It’s also excellent for touring the North West.
Do you need a caretaker? If so, I’m retiring early!
Thanks for the great compliments Roger. It would be a real bonus having a business/house sitter who appreciates this wonderful part of our amazing state. I will sing out when we get sick of it, but don’t send your resume just yet! Thanks again. Cheers, Tony

Thanks Brett, your comments are much appreciated, especially coming from such an enterprising fellow as yourself. I remember enjoying several cold beers around a fire with you on this very site around 20 something years ago. Thanks again and all the best to you and your family, Cheers Tony.
